Cabbie molests passenger, lands in police net after 90-min chase

Gurgaon: A 23-year-old cab driver was arrested on Thursday for allegedly molesting a woman passenger during a ride from Sector 47 to Cyber Hub.Police said the accused, Vijay Kumar (23), a BTech graduate from Prayagraj, was driving his personal car when he allegedly made obscene gestures and behaved inappropriately with the woman during the journey.According to the complaint, the woman, who works at a private company, had booked the cab from her residence in Sector 47 on May 21 morning. During the ride, the driver allegedly continued his behaviour despite her objections. She recorded a video on her mobile phone and repeatedly asked him to stop the vehicle.Station house officer (SHO), Sector 51 women police station, Suman, said the woman remained inside the cab for around 10–15 minutes during the incident.“The driver refused to stop initially despite repeated requests. He stopped only after she warned him, after which she got down and immediately informed the police control room (112),” the SHO said.Based on the complaint, a case was registered under sections 74 (assault or the use of criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), 75(2) (sexual harassment) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Sadar police station. Multiple teams traced the accused to Bhondsi using technical surveillance and local inputs, where he was arrested within 90 minutes of the complaint.Police said the car used in the incident has been seized. During interrogation, the accused admitted he was operating the cab using his personal vehicle.The woman’s prompt recording of the incident and quick alert to police helped in the swift arrest, officials said. “Gurgaon Police remains vigilant in cases involving crimes against women, and the public should immediately contact emergency helpline number 112 or approach the nearest police station in case of harassment or suspicious activity,” the SHO added.
