Cabbie dies in crash; kin claim he was chased, abducted & thrashed

New Delhi: A 30-year-old taxi driver died after his car crashed into a concrete electric box in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh on Friday, with CCTV footage showing the vehicle being driven rashly moments before the impact. The family of Mohammad Ujaib, the deceased, has alleged that he was being chased by some men allegedly sent by a financier over an unpaid loan, causing him to lose control and crash. The men then dragged an injured Ujaib out of the stricken car, abducted and assaulted him before dumping him near his house, leading to his death, the family claimed.Police, who are verifying these allegations, registered a case of kidnapping and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.Ujaib’s younger brother, Zaid, told police that the former called him up at 8 am, saying he would reach home in five to seven minutes. When he didn’t return, Zaid dialled him. Another cabbie answered the phone and told him that Ujaib was critically injured.Police were alerted about the accident only at 1.26 pm. Cops reached the spot near the DDA office in New Roshan Pura and found the wrecked taxi. Its front-right tyre had burst and its airbags were deployed.By that time, the cabbie had been taken to hospital where he was declared dead. His body was sent for a post-mortem examination. The CCTV footage from the area shows several vehicles moving on the road around the time of the accident, officers said, adding that they are examining the footage to ascertain whether the taxi was indeed being chased.Based on Zaid’s complaint, police registered a case under Sections 140 (kidnapping or abducting), 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 3(5) (common intention) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
