Pune: Cybercriminals cheated a 60-year-old chartered accountant from Kalyaninagar of Rs 34.5 lakh by promising him high returns on investments in online share trading. The fraud took place between July and Aug this year. The victim filed a complaint with the Pune cyber police, and after verification, an FIR was registered with the Yerawada police on Saturday.According to police, the suspects added the complainant’s phone number to a messaging app group where members discussed high returns from online share trading. Impressed by the profit figures shared in the group, the complainant contacted the group admin, who asked him to download a mobile app for share trading. He began by buying shares of lower value, but these did not yield any profit. The group admin then urged him to invest in high-value shares and IPOs, assuring him of better returns and offering help with the purchases. The complainant agreed and, at the admin’s instructions, transferred money to five different bank accounts. The app showed a profit of over Rs 70 lakh, prompting him to try to sell his shares and withdraw the money. The suspects blocked the withdrawal, at which point the complainant realised he had been duped and approached the police.
