Bongaigaon to get Assam’s 15th state-run medical college

Guwahati: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Friday approved the establishment of Bongaigaon Medical College, granting permission to admit 100 MBBS students from the next academic session.With the approval, Bongaigaon becomes Assam’s 15th state-run medical college, taking the state’s total MBBS seat capacity to 1,925, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a social media post.Calling it a “significant milestone” in Assam’s push to become a hub for medical education, Sarma thanked Union Health Minister JP Nadda for granting the approval and termed it a “proud moment for Assam”.The new college will be set up in Bongaigaon district, meeting a long-standing demand for a government medical institution in lower Assam. It is expected to serve as a tertiary care hub for Bongaigaon and adjoining areas.
