Mumbai: The BMC collected and scientifically disposed of around 2,499 metric tonnes of solid waste, including plastic, thermocol, wooden debris, and aquatic plants, from the city’s beaches during a special cleanliness drive conducted from July 9 and 19.As high tides with waves higher than 4.5 metres were expected between July 14 and 18, this special cleanliness campaign was planned keeping in view the possibility of large quantities of garbage being washed onto the beaches.Deputy municipal commissioner (solid waste management) Kiran Dighavkar said about 34 metric tonnes were collected from the 1.1km Girgaum Chowpatty, 152 metric tonnes from the 5km Dadar-Mahim beach, 127.2 metric tonnes from the 3.5km Chimbai-Waringpada beach, 44 metric tonnes from the 8km Madh-Marve beach, 1,825 metric tonnes from the 6km long Juhu beach, 277.6 metric tonnes from the 4.5km Versova beach, and 38.82 metric tonnes from the 7km Gorai beach.
