Agartala: BJP national president has appointed 44-year-old MLA Abhishek Debroy as the head of the party’s Tripura unit for the next three years.A pharmacy graduate, Debroy was first elected as an MLA from Matabari constituency in Gomati district in 2023. He succeeds Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, whose term ended early last year. Bhattacharjee had continued in the role as the party faced challenges in identifying a suitable successor.Party insiders said internal factionalism within the state BJP delayed the appointment process. Initially, the central leadership had asked the CM to propose candidates. In response, names like social welfare minister Tinku Roy, and incumbent vice presidents Tapas Bhattacharjee and Subal Bhowmik were suggested. However, a rival faction opposed these choices and proposed alternative names such as former CM Biplab Kumar Deb, former Union minister Pratima Bhowmik, and general secretaries MLA Bhagaban Das and Amit Raskit. These suggestions were reportedly rejected by the party’s high command, leading to a prolonged deadlock. When Nitin Nabin took over as BJP chief, he emphasized placing younger leaders in key positions. Following his directive, the Chief Minister was once again asked to recommend a dynamic and organizationally capable candidate for the role. Subsequently, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha put forward Abhishek Debroy’s name for consideration.Debroy’s appointment, which will likely extend through the Feb 2028 assembly elections, was finalized after CM Manik Saha met with BJP chief Nitin Nabin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Wednesday. His selection was formally announced by BJP National General Secretary Arun Singh, with immediate effect.Speaking about his new role, Debroy expressed his commitment to strengthening the party’s grassroots organization, fostering unity among members, and working closely with senior leaders to achieve their collective goals.
