Hyderabad: BJP state president N Ramchander Rao said Congress has proven itself to be thoroughly anti-women by defeating the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament on Friday. He said the party’s opposition reveals its discomfort with the idea of ordinary women entering Parliament and state legislative assemblies in large numbers. It also shows that its politics is driven not by principle, but by vote-bank calculations and the interests of one family. The BJP gave a call to lay siege to chief minister Revanth Reddy’s residence in Jubilee Hills in protest against the Congress party’s opposition to the Bill. Police placed Rao under house arrest on Saturday and foiled attempts by BJP leaders to stage the protest.Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Rao said the Congress party, founded during the British era and now led by an Italian-born leader, remains trapped in a culture of subservience, where one family continues to dominate its politics.“Be it Revanth Reddy or any other Congress leader, the same feudal mindset runs deep within the party. Their politics seems to suggest that only the Gandhi family’s women should occupy positions of prominence, while ordinary women from humble backgrounds are denied the opportunity to rise,” he said.“A grave injustice has been done to women. The women of this state will never forgive the Congress party for this betrayal. Congress has acted in a manner that blocks women from entering legislative bodies. They themselves supported the Bill in 2023. If they have repeatedly claimed that they are not against women’s reservation, then why did they vote against it now? Their actions have exposed their true intentions: they do not genuinely want women’s reservation to become a reality,” the Telangana BJP chief said.“Women across the state and youth from our party came out in protest and attempted to lay siege to the CM’s residence. But instead of allowing a democratic protest, I was placed under house arrest. Not only has Congress obstructed women’s reservation, it is now also suppressing democratic dissent in Telangana,” he said.
