Birthday outing ends in tragedy; family alleges drug overdose behind teen’s death

Shariq.Majeed@timesofindia.comLudhiana: A 19-year-old youth from Shatabgarh village died under mysterious circumstances after being found unconscious near Hasanpur village, with his family alleging that he was administered an overdose of drugs by friends. The family has named two persons in its complaint and demanded strict action.The deceased, Amandeep Singh, had left home on Sept 14, his birthday, after telling family members he was going out to buy items for the celebration. According to his elder brother Rinku, Amandeep later became unreachable, and his phone was eventually switched off.The next day, the family received information that Amandeep was lying unconscious near Hasanpur village. His motorcycle was found parked nearby, while his mobile phone was missing. He was first taken to Machhiwara hospital and later referred to hospitals in Samrala and Chandigarh due to his critical condition.Doctors at Govt Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh, declared him dead. The family claims doctors indicated a possible overdose, though police said the exact cause of death will be known only after the viscera examination report is received.Rinku alleged that his brother was deliberately given drugs, leading to his death. “We want those responsible to be punished,” he said, adding that the family has recorded its statement with the police and provided the names of two suspects.SHO Karamjit Singh of Machhiwara police station said Amandeep’s post-mortem has been conducted and further action will depend on the findings of the viscera report. He added that while the family suspects those accompanying the deceased may have made him consume drugs, no formal statement alleging this has been submitted to the police so far.
