Ahmedabad: After the Airport Environment Committee’s order on measures to prevent potential bird strikes on flights taking off and landing at Ahmedabad airport, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has banned the sale of non-vegetarian food at the Chamanpura fish market and in the Holi Chakla area of Asarwa ward. On Thursday, AMC put up boards announcing the ban at these locations. Enforcement will commence soon and complaints will be filed in case of violations.Officials said the temporary fish market in Asarwa attracted birds, increasing the risk of bird hits, adding that after the AI 171 crash of June 12, 2025, steps are being taken to reduce such hazards. Earlier, as the makeshift fish market near the airport posed a hazard, a proposal was floated to build a proper facility in Asarwa. But here too, a temporary one came up, with plans to set up a facility in Makarba instead. The decision on allocating a plot for the market in Makarba has not been taken for three years now. At a standing committee meeting on Oct 6, 2022, a proposal that AMC and Gujarat Fisheries Central Co-operative Association Limited (GFCCA) exchange plots was presented but not approved. An AMC official said, “Following the order from the Airport Environment Committee, a ban has been imposed on the sale of non-vegetarian food in the Chamanpura fish market and Holi Chakla area in Asarwa ward, from Civil Hospital to the old MLA quarters. Boards have been put up regarding this, and enforcement action will be taken soon.”
