Kolkata: In a major policy shift, the Bengal government is to conduct a detailed review of the long-standing bicycle ban on 70 major roads in Kolkata. Introduced by a previous regime, the restrictions had faced intense criticism for turning the streets into an extortion ground, disproportionately affecting working class citizens. Data reveals that 73% of the city’s cyclists are “livelihood bicyclists”—couriers, milkmen, and daily wage earners, who rely entirely on two wheels to earn livelihoods.The decision to reconsider the ban arrives at a critical point, as the country grapples with high emissions and fossil-fuel dependency. The push for urban cycling has found prominent support in PM Narendra Modi’s green and fitness mandates. Advocacy groups and commuters across the state have enthusiastically welcomed the review, viewing it as a long-awaited victory for sustainable mobility.The policy review came at a time when a massive celebration of World Bicycle Day 2026 was held. Under the central government’s “Fit India – Sundays on Cycle” initiative, more than 4,000 enthusiasts gathered at the iconic Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Stadium for a vibrant 10 km rally.The event was flagged off by minister of youth affairs and sports Nisith Pramanik, state cabinet minister Sharadwat Mukherjee, former Team India cricketer Ashoke Dinda, and AIFF president Kalyan Choubey. Kolkata Police commissioner Ajay Nand and Olympians Seema Biswas and Bombayla Devi were in attendance as well.Beyond urban mobility, the state govt rolled out a rewards package to turn Bengal into a national sports powerhouse. Pramanik also mentioned a dramatic hike in cash prizes for international medalists from the state, pledging Rs 8 crore for gold, Rs 7 crore for silver, and Rs 6 crore for bronze winners. Furthermore, successful sportspersons are guaranteed govt employment tailored to their qualifications, scaling all the way up to the rank of deputy superintendent of police (DSP).“Today’s event of ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ drew an incredible crowd of over 4,000 participants,” said Sibananda Mishra, regional director of the Sports Authority of India (Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre). “Cyclists cruised a vibrant 10 km route, while the stadium grounds came alive with everything from Yoga and Zumba to rope skipping.
