Kolkata: Hastings Police has started a criminal investigation against a bank employee after allegations of extortion and death threats made by a senior citizen and her daughter. Police sources said the case began after a written complaint was lodged earlier this month.During the initial inquiry, police found that the bank employee had allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh to release a demand draft.The money was linked to the sale of a property owned by the complainant’s elderly mother.According to the complaint, when the family refused to pay the money, the bank employee allegedly threatened them. The official reportedly said the complainant and her elderly mother would be killed by influential people if the money was not paid immediately.After receiving the threats, the complainant approached the police, submitted copies of WhatsApp chats, mobile records, and other digital evidence to support the complaint.Police said the initial inquiry showed that the allegations disclosed cognisable offences. Officials said a detailed investigation is needed to protect electronic evidence, collect digital records, question witnesses, and seize relevant banking and communication documents.A formal case has now been registered against the accused bank employee.Senior police officials said the case has been given priority because it involves a bank employee and serious death threats. The accused has been served a legal notice.
