Ghaziabad: A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly stabbing a 32-year-old man to death following a road rage incident earlier this month in Muradnagar on Tuesday. Police scanned multiple CCTV camera footage over the last 17 days to trace the suspect through a shoulder bag that he had allegedly dropped at the crime spot during a scuffle. A knife he allegedly used in the crime was later recovered.According to cops, CCTV footage helped them identify seven persons travelling with bags of the same colour and style through the same spot. When officers visited their homes, six still had their bags. The seventh, Sameer, a resident of Muradnagar who worked as a mechanic at a crane gear manufacturing unit in Raj Nagar, did not. He was subsequently detained and, during questioning, confessed to the crime, police said. The victim, Himanshu Chaudhary, also from Muradnagar, worked on a contract basis at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) in Ghaziabad. DCP (Rural) Surendra Nath Tiwari said on Oct 9, Himanshu was heading for some work on his scooty when Sameer was crossing the road on his motorcycle. The handlebars of the two two-wheelers brushed against each other, and a heated argument broke out between the two men over who was at fault.“The men started abusing one another, which led to traffic congestion. Some local people stepped in, calmed them down, and told them to leave the area. Himanshu left, but after going about 100 metres, he returned and rammed his scooty into Sameer’s bike. The two then started fighting again, and during the altercation, Sameer pulled a knife from his bag and stabbed Himanshu. Sameer fled on his bike as the victim was left bleeding profusely on the spot,” Tiwari said.Residents alerted police, and Himanshu was taken to hospital, where he died during treatment. His family filed a complaint and an FIR was registered. Police found a shoulder bag at the spot containing some food items and fruits. Teams then reviewed footage from more than 500 CCTV cameras along a 5km stretch.“Based on the footage, they initially treated 100 people as suspects and matched the bag accordingly. In the end, cops identified seven people, who were seen travelling with a bag of the same colour,” Tiwari said.Police visited the homes of all seven one by one and checked their bags. Six produced theirs. Sameer, however, told officers his bag had been lost and that he had bought a new one.“When Sameer was questioned and asked about his bag, he claimed that his bag had been lost somewhere and that he had bought a new one. He was then detained and interrogated further, after which he confessed to the crime. He stated that during the fight, his bag had fallen there, and after stabbing the deceased, he fled on his bike, leaving the bag behind,” Tiwari said. The accused was booked under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Muradnagar police station. He was produced in court on Tuesday and sent to judicial custody.
