At least 50 lakh saplings planted under govt’s plantation drive

New Delhi: Of the total target of planting 70 lakh saplings, various agencies in the city have planted 50 lakh saplings so far, environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa said Thursday. The “Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam” campaign portal has enabled citizens and Resident Welfare Associations to register and participate in plantation activities. At least 1.8 lakh people have registered on the portal, with approximately 1.5 lakh people participating, resulting in the plantation of around 3.4 lakh trees through citizen participation, said Sirsa. The minister highlighted the role of 13 vriksh raths in taking the campaign directly to neighbourhoods. Over 58,000 people have been connected through the vriksh rath initiative while more than six lakh saplings have been distributed free of cost through institutions including CRPF, BSF, schools and colleges. “Trees are being geo-tagged, while a QR-code-based system is being developed to allow citizens to track the growth of the trees planted by them,” he said.
