CM Sarma Lays Foundation Stone For Adani Thermal Plant
Model of Adani Power Limited’s 3,200 MW Thermal Power Plant to come up at Chapar in Assam’s Dhubri district
Guwahati: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for Adani Power’s Rs 48,000-crore plant in Dhubri district on Sunday.The 3,200 MW plant at Chapar will comprise four 800-MW units using ultra-supercritical technology. The first 800 MW is expected by Dec 2030, with full capacity scheduled by 2032.“Today is a proud day for Assam as the foundation stone was laid for a 3,200-MW thermal supercritical power plant. The project will involve an investment of Rs 48,000 crore. During the construction phase, around 25,000 people will get employment, while about 5,000 people will be employed once the plant becomes operational,” Sarma said on Sunday.He said Assam’s electricity demand, currently 3,026 MW, was projected to reach 5,800 MW by 2032. The state generates about 400 MW and procures another 1,200 MW through long-term agreements, while purchasing the balance at an average of Rs 8 per unit.Sarma said power from the project could reduce the state’s average procurement cost to Rs 7 per unit, saving Re 1 per unit. He added that the increased supply would encourage industrial investment and make Assam self-reliant in the power sector for a few years, though another deficit could emerge by 2035. “By then, several other developments will have taken place. But at least for the immediate future, this power plant will make Assam self-reliant in the power sector,” CM added.“With the generation of 3,200 MW of electricity, there will be greater encouragement among entrepreneurs to set up industries in the state. Therefore, this project will support a new phase of industrialisation in Assam,” he added.Adani Group director Jeet Adani said the project would use high-efficiency systems and modern environmental safeguards. He said Assam could become the “Battery of India” and a major energy hub.“Once commissioned, the plant is expected to strengthen Assam’s energy base and meet the power requirements of households, commercial establishments and industries,” he added.The project is part of the group’s planned Rs 63,000-crore power-sector investment in Assam. This includes Rs 15,000 crore for two pumped-storage plants with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW. Adani Energy Solutions is also implementing smart-metering projects in the state.Sarma said the state govt was developing a 33,000-acre industrial land bank and seeking to expand it.In 2025, around 800 families were evicted from about 3,500 bighas at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra village under Chapar revenue circle for the project, triggering protests.
