Ahmedabad: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has officially commenced extensive structural restoration work at the historic Mata Bhavani ni Vav in Ahmedabad on Saturday. The launch ceremony took place in the presence of several key local dignitaries, including the area’s Member of Parliament (MP), Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), the city mayor, and other senior municipal and heritage officials.Believed to have been constructed in the 11th century during the Solanki dynasty rule in Gujarat, this ancient stepwell stands as one of the earliest surviving examples of subterranean water architecture in India.Speaking to TOI, Shubha Majmuder, the superintending archaeologist of the ASI Circle (Vadodara), explained that the initial phase of the restoration project will primarily focus on stabilizing and conserving the central shaft of the well.“The core idea is to carefully replace and repair the heavily damaged stones and weathered structural components deep within the well. As the restoration progresses, other sections of the stepwell structure will also be covered in a phase-wise manner at this ASI-protected monument,” Majmuder said.
