Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh mountaineer January Tali has scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to summit both Mount Kun (7,077 metres) and Mount Nun (7,135 metres) in Ladakh during the same climbing season.Tali summited Mount Nun, a technically demanding peak with steep snow and ice sections, at 8.15 am on Sept 8. The feat came just 43 days after she climbed Mt Kun on July 27, alongside fellow state climber Hachu Lombo.The expedition, approved by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation, was led by Ladakh-based mountain guide Tsewang Namgyal and supported by a high-altitude Sherpa team. Tali was part of an international climbing group that included mountaineers from Germany, France and Norway.“Mt Nun was tough. The upper portion after Camp 3 was very technical,” Tali said.Tali, who has earlier climbed Mentok Kangri and UT Kangri, now aims to scale an 8,000-metre peak.Arunachal Pradesh governor KT Parnaik congratulated Tali, calling her double ascent a moment of pride for the state and the country. “January Tali has demonstrated exceptional courage, endurance, technical skill, and unwavering determination. It is a milestone for Indian mountaineering and a shining example of the indomitable spirit of Arunachal’s youth,” the governor said.
