AR, DRI seize 8,764 kg poppy seeds worth Rs 1.31 crore; two held

Silchar: In a joint operation, Assam Rifles and the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) on Saturday seized 8,764 kg of poppy seeds worth Rs 1.31 crore from the Silchar bypass road.Two Silchar residents have been arrested in connection with the seizure, who have been identified as Azmal Hussain Barbhuiya and Nazir Hussain Barbhuiya.Officials said based on intelligence inputs, the security personnel intercepted a truck. While searching the vehicle, the poppy seeds, as well as two mobile phones were seized. The truck, too, has been confiscated.Sources said the operation was part of ongoing efforts by Assam Rifles and DRI to curb smuggling and illegal trade in the region.Investigators are currently probing the source and intended destination of the consignment and examining whether a wider network is involved.
