Another gym death: Nagaon doc collapses mid-workout, dies

Guwahati: A routine evening workout ended in tragedy at a gym in Nagaon when Dr Sahin Rahman, an associate professor at Nagaon Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), suddenly collapsed and became unconscious — a chilling reminder of the growing number of sudden gym deaths being reported across India. The doctor, who was around in his 50s, was later declared dead at the hospital. The exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed, though initial medical opinions point to a sudden cardiac arrest. The sudden collapse of the doctor on Thursday evening was captured on the gym’s CCTV, and the footage has since circulated widely on social media. It shows Dr Rahman exercising normally before collapsing without any visible prior signs of distress.According to a source, gym staff and fellow members rushed to his aid and immediately called for medical help. He was shifted to NMCH, where doctors attempted resuscitation but could not save him.Dr Rahman, a resident of Machkhowa in Guwahati, was an associate professor in Department of Community Medicine at NMCH. Colleagues described him as a dedicated teacher and clinician actively involved in training medical students and treating patients. Despite his demanding professional schedule, he was known to be highly fitness-conscious, visiting the gym daily with no known illnesses or prior health complaints.Hospital sources and police stated that the exact cause of death will be confirmed after further examination, and no formal post-mortem detail has been released. However, doctors not connected to the case cautioned that the incident underscores how sudden cardiac events can strike even seemingly healthy, active individuals, especially in the 30-50 age group. They emphasised the importance of regular health check-ups, including cardiac screening, awareness of family history regarding heart disease, and not ignoring subtle symptoms like unexplained fatigue, breathlessness, or chest discomfort during exercise. This tragedy adds to a growing list of sudden, fatal medical emergencies occurring in gyms across the country. Over the past few years, similar incidents have sparked concerns about gym-related cardiac arrests.Similar incidents have been reported from other parts of India.
