Amritpal faces video trial in case of gadget recovery from his cell

Dibrugarh: Waris Punjab De chief and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh, currently lodged at the Dibrugarh Police Station under Punjab Police custody, underwent trial proceedings on Friday through video-conferencing in connection with the recovery of unauthorised electronic devices from the NSA cell of Dibrugarh Central Jail on Feb 17, 2024.The hearing was conducted before judicial magistrate first class Chandan Saikia in Dibrugarh.The case relates to the recovery of a spy-camera pen, a smartphone with a SIM card, a keypad phone, a TV remote with a keyboard, pen drives, Bluetooth headphones and speakers, and a smartwatch from the NSA cell where Amritpal and nine of his aides were imprisoned.An FIR in the case was filed by the then superintendent of Dibrugarh Central Jail, Nipen Das, at the Dibrugarh Police Station following the recovery of the devices.Friday’s proceedings were held simultaneously for all 10 accused via video-conferencing. While Amritpal appeared before the court from the Dibrugarh PS, his nine associates — Papalpreet Singh, Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Kulwant Singh, Varinder Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala, uncle Harjit Singh, Basant Singh, Gurinder Singh Aujla and Bhagwant Singh — joined the hearing from various jails in Punjab, including Goindwal, Bhatinda and Patiala.Amritpal’s lawyer Jasbir Kaur confirmed the developments and provided details of the proceedings.She added that Amritpal will remain at the Dibrugarh Police Station until Saturday, after which he will be shifted back to Dibrugarh Central Jail. His trial in the Ajnala police station attack case will also be conducted through video-conferencing from Dibrugarh.
