Rajkot: Amreli city Congress president Sandeep Dhanani has been arrested after a case was registered against him for allegedly assaulting a 36-year-old man at a paan shop in Amreli, leaving him with head injuries that required nine stitches.Amreli City police registered an offence for attempted murder, criminal intimidation and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace based on a complaint filed by Dharmkumar Joshipura, a mobile phone repairer.According to the complaint, Joshipura had gone to Raj Chamunda Paan near the Regional Transport Office on Monday night to buy mavo, a chewing tobacco preparation. Dhanani was sitting on a bench at the shop.Joshipura said Dhanani approached him and told him to leave. He further alleged that Dhanani picked up a kettle from the tea counter and struck him on the head four or five times. Dhanani also allegedly abused him and threatened to kill him.Joshipura went home covered in blood and informed his wife, who took him to the trauma centre at Amreli Civil Hospital. Doctors administered nine stitches to his head. A CT scan later revealed bleeding in the brain, according to the complaint.Amreli City police inspector M M Jhala said an argument had taken place earlier between Dhanani and his wife, after which police were called to the location. Dhanani later left, and the incident involving Joshipura occurred at Raj Chamunda Paan some time afterwards, Jhala said.Police have seized CCTV footage from the area for the investigation. Police sources said Dhanani and Joshipura had been involved in a previous dispute over an unspecified issue. According to the sources, Dhanani was upset after the argument with his wife when he encountered Joshipura at the paan shop.
