MUMBAI: Despite opposition from medical experts, Maharashtra Tuesday became the first state where a homeopath has been allowed to prescribe modern medicines by the state medical council based on a one-year certificate course.The move has raised alarm across the medical community who fear this would lead to life-threatening consequences with no framework for accountability as of now.The homeopath, Neha Pawar, with a one-year certificate in pharmacology, had her registration done after a mob of homeopaths protested at Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) offices on Tuesday.An MMC official said there was an attempt to stall registration till talks are over between doctor’s associations and the govt but they had given in after homeopaths entered MMC offices.Across the state, Indian Medical Association (IMA), along with Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD), is expected to intensify boycott of non-emergency medical services on Wednesday. On Thursday, the boycott would be extended to emergency medical services.The hearing on the matter is still ongoing in Bombay HC with verdict expected by mid-Aug. The registration granted to the homeopath is conditional and subject to change as per the HC’s verdict.
