Gorakhpur: A private ambulance crashed through a railing and plunged nearly 20 feet at the 500-bed Child Care Institute of BRD Medical College late Thursday, allegedly due to the driver’s negligence.Hospital authorities said the ambulance, registered in the name of Sarkar Hospital in Gulriha, had brought a patient to the institute. After dropping off the patient, the driver was exiting the portico when he reportedly engaged reverse gear by mistake. The vehicle rolled backwards, broke through the railing and fell nearly 20 feet to the ground below.Eyewitnesses and hospital staff rushed to the scene and rescued the driver from the damaged ambulance. No one else was injured in the incident.Employees of Sarkar Hospital later arrived and removed the damaged vehicle from the premises. The driver’s identity could not be immediately confirmed.BRD Medical College chief medical superintendent Ashok Kumar Yadav said the accident caused damage to govt property and that the college administration would lodge a police complaint seeking compensation.Preliminary inquiries suggested that the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Officials said the driver could not be traced after the mishap, and further inquiry is underway.
