Aligarh: From Locks production to Defence Manufacturing

It is since generations, Aligarh was known across India as the ‘City of Locks’. Its thousands of small and medium enterprises supplied locks, hardware, brass products and building fittings to domestic and international markets. While this industrial tradition gave the district a unique identity, Aligarh’s economy remained largely dependent on traditional manufacturing, with limited diversification into high-technology sectors.During the last nine years, however, Aligarh has witnessed a significant economic transition. Supported by improved infrastructure, industrial policies, investment promotion, the One District One Product (ODOP) programme and the establishment of one of the six nodes of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, the district has begun positioning itself as a strategic manufacturing destination for defence, engineering and advanced manufacturing. These efforts are also contributing to Uttar Pradesh’s larger ambition of becoming a $1 trillion Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP/SGDP) economy.The Defence Corridor: A Game ChangerThe biggest catalyst in Aligarh’s transformation has been its inclusion as a major node in the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor announced in 2018. Among the six corridor nodes—Lucknow, Kanpur, Jhansi, Agra, Chitrakoot and Aligarh—the Aligarh node leverages the district’s engineering base, skilled workforce and proximity to Delhi-NCR. The scheme focuses on preserving and modernising traditional skills through credit support (including margin-money assistance and subsidies), skill development and toolkits, common facility centres, branding, packaging, marketing assistance, participation in trade fairs and e-commerce linkages.Aligarh’s lock and hardware cluster—comprising thousands of micro and small units that produce hundreds of thousands of locks daily—has benefited from technology upgradation, quality improvement, export promotion and diversification into higher-value items such as digital locks. ODOP has helped many units move up the value chain while retaining their core strengths in machining, forging, casting and precision fabrication. One notable milestone was the commencement of operations by Amitec Electronics, which established an electronic warfare manufacturing facility with an investment of about Rs 330 crore at the Aligarh node, highlighting the district’s emergence in advanced defence manufacturing.Contribution to State GSDPSince the launch of the Defence Corridor, investment commitments across Uttar Pradesh have expanded steadily, with Aligarh emerging as one of the key western UP investment destinations. The corridor has attracted numerous MoUs, land allotments and industrial proposals, with Aligarh among the leading nodes for industrial activity including the highest number of companies allotted land in some assessments.These investments are expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while creating demand for ancillary industries. Many of these enterprises are upgrading technology to participate in defence and engineering supply chains.
