Dibrugarh: Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) members on Wednesday blocked the road at Bahadur Chariali in Tinsukia, bringing traffic to a halt, to protest the deteriorated Tinsukia-Duliajan connecting road and demand immediate repairs. They raised slogans and held placards, saying monsoon rains have worsened the cratered, pothole-ridden stretch. The Tinsukia-Duliajan road is a key link between the Tinsukia district headquarters and Duliajan, Oil India Limited’s (OIL) field headquarters, about 20 km away. Thousands rely on it daily, including students, businesspeople, patients and other commuters. With deep craters damaging vehicles and increasing the risk of accidents, travel has become hazardous, especially where rainwater masks the depth of potholes. The AJYCP blamed OIL for the road’s condition, alleging that heavy OIL vehicles — tankers carrying crude oil, personnel carriers and trucks transporting equipment — use the route daily to and from oil fields, accelerating damage.“The constant movement of heavy OIL vehicles has destroyed the road. What was once a motorable road has now become a death trap for commuters,” said AJYCP Tinsukia district vice-president Kanchan Borah. He said the monsoon has compounded the danger by filling craters with water, making them difficult to judge.“Both the state govt and OIL must take immediate responsibility and repair this road without any further delay. OIL generates enormous revenue from its operations in this region. It is only fair that the oil giant contributes to maintaining the infrastructure that its own vehicles have destroyed,” Borah added.AJYCP warned it would intensify its agitation if the state govt and OIL do not begin repair work within a stipulated time.
