Aizawl: The court of the additional district and sessions judge in Aizawl on Friday sentenced Lalsiamliana (37), a resident of Salem Veng on the southern outskirts of Aizawl, to life imprisonment and fined him Rs 50,000 for murdering his wife.The court said he would undergo an additional five months’ imprisonment if he failed to pay the fine.Judge Sylvie Zomuanpuii Ralte convicted Lalsiamliana under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, on Thursday. The court acquitted him of the charge under Section 64(1) of the BNS, noting that the accused and the victim were married.According to the prosecution, Lalsiamliana attacked his wife, Rebek Chanchinthathangi (41), with a piece of firewood on the head on the night of Feb 15 last year. He then dragged her by a rope around her neck while their children watched.After the killing, Lalsiamliana allegedly concealed her body under grass about 100 metres from their home.After being informed of the incident, officials from the nearby Kulikawn police station reached the spot and arrested Lalsiamliana, according to the prosecution.The incident triggered public outrage across the state, with people calling for the harshest possible punishment.
