AI-enabled CCTV cameras to boost security at 8 railway stations in Jaipur

Jaipur: North Western Railway (NWR) has begun installing artificial intelligence-enabled CCTV cameras at eight stations in Jaipur Division to improve passenger safety, prevent track trespassing, and strengthen surveillance, officials said.TOI spoke to railway authorities Sunday about the cameras and their functions.NWR Chief Public Relations Officer Amit Sudarshan said the installation work had begun and the project was expected to be completed within the next couple of months. “The idea is to keep safety and security as the utmost priority. These cameras will also check for trespassing on railway tracks, as any such incident will trigger an alert to the control room,” Sudarshan said.Officials added that the AI-enabled surveillance system is expected to help railway authorities monitor passenger movement, identify suspicious activities and respond more quickly to potential security threats. “The technology will also assist in detecting unauthorised entry into restricted areas and monitoring incidents that could endanger passengers,” said an officer. The eight stations identified for the initiative are Jaipur Junction, Gandhinagar Jaipur, Sanganer, Alwar, Rewari, Bandikui, Ringas and Kishangarh.Officials said the AI-enabled surveillance system would help monitor passenger movement, identify suspicious activities, detect unauthorised entry into restricted areas and enable quicker responses to potential security threats. The cameras are also expected to help detect unattended objects, incidents involving passengers near platforms and attempts to tamper with surveillance equipment.“AI-based video analytics can help identify specific incidents and generate alerts, enabling railway personnel to take timely action. Also, one of the key objectives is to prevent people from entering railway tracks illegally, a practice that poses a serious risk to life and can disrupt train operations. With alerts reaching the control room, railway officials will be able to coordinate with station staff and other personnel to respond to potential violations,” an officer said.Sudarshan said the move was part of the railway’s efforts to strengthen security infrastructure at stations witnessing significant passenger movement.
