AI, coding and AR/VR will be taken to 5,000 govt schools on pilot basis: minister Rajmohan

Chennai: Lessons on artificial intelligence (AI), cognitive AI, augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), HTML and coding will be introduced in 5,000 schools on a pilot basis, school education minister Rajmohan said on Friday. After chairing his first review meeting with department officials and chief and district education officers, Rajmohan told reporters that infrastructural changes in schools would be the first step. “We have seen students benefitting from ChatGPT and Gemini. Our idea is to make sure that students develop the skills to create their own ChatGPTs and Geminis in the future,” he said, adding that while the vision cannot be realized in one day, efforts will be made consistently. The minister said the department had several options to train students. “Similar to the training carried out for teachers for the new Class I–III textbooks, trainers can be roped in, and they will, in turn, train the schoolteachers. Secondly, we have identified vacancies and recruitment can be done with the help of subject teachers,” he added.Asked about curbing caste-based violence in schools and the implementation of the Justice K Chandru report, finalized in 2023, Rajmohan said measures would be rolled out periodically and that discussions on what and how to implement them would be held to expedite the process. “There will be no space in schools for anything that encourages division or promotes hatred under this govt. Only orators, social thinkers and forward-thinking alumni will be invited to schools to interact with students and inculcate a scientific temper in them,” he added.
