Ahmedabad: A 27-year-old security guard, arrested late Saturday night for allegedly raping a woman on the terrace of a residential building in Jodhpur, was shot in the leg by a police inspector in the early hours of Monday.R S Parmar of Anandnagar police, who shot the accused, said the firing took place when he and his team took Dharm Singh, the accused, to Hebatpur to recover the victim’s phone as part of the inquest procedure. Singh had allegedly fled with themobile after the offence.“When we reached the place, the accused grabbed my holster, in which I had kept my service revolver. As he tried to snatch it, the revolver misfired, and a bullet hit one of the constables. Despite that, the accused did not let go of the weapon. I snatched it and shot him in the leg,” Parmar told TOI. Bodakdev police are probing the firing. Singh had been deployed at the society only last week.The victim, a student of interior design, was living as a paying guest in a flat in the society. She had gone to the terrace for a walk when the accused allegedly approached her. When she refused his advances, he allegedly assaulted her, tightened a wire around her neck, and raped her. Police said the assault lasted nearly an hour. The wire prevented her from shouting for help. After the accused fled with her phone and locked her out on the terrace, she raised an alarm and was rescued by residents living on the floors below.A senior police officer said the victim, who suffered injuries to her neck, has been hospitalised and is under severe mental trauma. According to records of the home department, Gujarat Police opened fire in 18 separate incidents between May 2025 and Aug 2026. While two encounters ended in the death of the accused, the remaining 16 resulted in injuries, predominantly gunshot wounds to the leg.
