Ahmedabad: Gujarat University nudges staff to carpool, cut fuel use

Ahmedabad: In line with the Prime Minister’s recent appeal to conserve fuel and reduce petrol and diesel use, Gujarat University (GU) has issued a directive urging all its employees and officials to adopt a carpooling system. The instruction, issued by the vice-chancellor, encourages staff members to share transport wherever possible, especially with colleagues living in nearby areas. The initiative aims to minimise the number of vehicles used for commuting, thereby contributing to fuel conservation and environmental sustainability.University authorities have emphasised that employees and officers should coordinate with co-workers residing in the same or nearby localities and travel together to and from the campus. This step is expected to significantly reduce fuel consumption and ease traffic congestion.Apart from carpooling, the university has also promoted the use of public transport options such as metro services, electric buses and other available transit systems. Officials believe that increased reliance on such alternatives will further support the goal of lowering dependence on fossil fuels.Furthermore, the university has advised staff to carry out work online wherever feasible. By promoting digital operations, the administration hopes to limit unnecessary travel and improve efficiency in daily functioning. The move reflects a broader effort to align institutional practices with national priorities on energy conservation and environmental responsibility. University officials have urged all employees to actively take part in this initiative and contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly work culture.
