Ahmedabad: A 50-year-old woman, identified as Ramila Panchal, died by suicide at Kankaria lake on Saturday morning, police said. Panchal was a resident of Ramol and is survived by her husband, who works with a group of labourers, and a daughter who is married and has children.Kankaria police inspector J P Jadeja said that Panchal prepared lunch for her husband in the morning and left home. She then called her husband and informed him that she would never return. She did not explain her decision and asked her husband not to search for her.The PI said that she told her husband to take his mother to the doctor.Police said that while the husband was searching for her, he was told that a woman had died by suicide at the Kankaria lakefront.When he reached the site, he discovered that the body was his wife’s.Police said the statements of neighbours and relatives indicate no prolonged illness or family disputes. Relatives told investigators that Ramila was a doting mother and grandmother.Cops said that the lakefront buzzes with walkers at the time she died by suicide. However, no one saw her jump into the lake.Kankaria was associated with frequent suicides before the lakefront was redeveloped in 2009. After renovation and the introduction of controlled entry, the number of such cases declined sharply. The last available record is that of a man who died by suicide seven years ago.
