After years of flooding after rain, GMDA now plans drain for Dwarka eway sectors

Gurgaon: GMDA is planning to build a 3.3 km stormwater drainage network to tackle recurring waterlogging in new sectors along Dwarka Expressway. The proposed drain will run along roads in sectors 37C, 37D and 9B before discharging into the Badshapur drain. The authority has prepared an estimate of around Rs 20 crore for the project and is now in the process of seeking approval. “We will soon invite bids for the work,” a GMDA official said. The network is planned to provide a proper outlet for rainwater from the newly developed residential areas. These sectors had been developed by HSVP over a decade ago without a comprehensive stormwater drainage network. As a result, rainwater has often accumulated on internal roads and main stretches during the monsoon, affecting daily commute. It becomes a bigger problem during intense rainfall, when existing temporary arrangements and natural slopes are unable to carry the volume of water quickly.RWA president of Apex Our Home Satvir Yadav said, “Every monsoon, we face serious problems because there is no proper stormwater drainage. Waterlogging damages the roads, leads to traffic jams and even causes two-wheelers to skid and fall. Around 4,000 families live in Sector 37C, but there is no proper arrangement. The sectors have been developed by the authorities and people are living, but basic infrastructure has still not received adequate attention.”The project had received administrative approval from the GMDA board in June 2022, but the work has not yet reached the construction stage. It was later expanded to include stormwater channelisation along the Pataudi Road stretch between Umang Bharadwaj Chowk and Gadoli, a low-lying area prone to water accumulation. Subsequently, MCG took over the work on the Umang Bharadwaj Chowk-Gadoli stretch, while the GMDA’s proposed drainage network remains focused on the sectors according to the original plan.
