After hostel death, NUJS allows distraught classmates to take exams later

Kolkata: West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata, on Thursday decided that some students who, following the death of a first-year law student on Monday, were too distraught to take the end-semester exams from Friday could take their exams at a later date. An official said, “Some of the students, who were close to the deceased, are in shock. They need more time to cope with the loss. Therefore, on humanitarian grounds, it was decided that those who will not be able to take the exam on Friday can do so at a later date.”WBNUJS held a condolence meeting on campus on Thursday. On Wednesday, the student body of the institute held a condolence meet and an online grief counselling session for students. “The university has a counsellor who is available but we thought of organising a specialised grief counselling session where an expert from outside interacted with the students. The participation of the students was good. We plan to hold such sessions at regular intervals,” said a student.The 19-year-old first-year student died after reportedly falling from the sixth floor of a hostel building in Salt Lake. No suicide note was discovered.
