After fight with wife, man jumps into Agra canal with 2 children, 1 kid rescued

Gurgaon: A 38-year-old civil engineer jumped into Agra canal with his two minor sons after an argument with wife in Faridabad on Sunday night, prompting a search operation. One child was rescued, while efforts continue to trace the father and the younger boy.Bhagwat Dayal was a resident of Asaoti and worked for a private firm in Gurgaon, police said. The incident came to light after locals noticed a motorcycle parked on a bridge near Deeg village and alerted police.“A call was received around 9pm informing us about a bike parked on the bridge, raising suspicion that someone may have jumped into the canal,” a senior police officer said.A passer-by who spotted the bike informed police, after which Dial 112 teams and State Disaster Response Force, or SDRF, reached the spot and began a search operation.Despite carrying out search operation in the canal through the night, the three could not be found initially. A breakthrough came early Monday when police received information around 7.30am that a child had been found in the canal near Mandkaul, about 5km from the suspected jump site.“Locals spotted the boy floating in the canal and immediately jumped in to rescue him. A police team reached the spot and shifted him to a hospital,” the officer said. The rescued child, Samrat (9), is under medical observation and has not yet recorded his statement. Police said his condition is stable.Preliminary inquiry suggested Bhagwat had argued with his wife before the incident. He is believed to have taken his two sons to the market and later gone to the canal, where he allegedly jumped in with them.Search operations by SDRF teams and police are continuing to trace Bhagwat and his younger son, Yug (7). Police said more details are expected once the missing persons are found and the child’s statement is recorded.
