Mohali: After a 15-day deadline issued to cable operators expired without action, ward 6 councillor Sunny Singh Ahluwalia Friday launched a drive to remove hanging defunct cable TV wires from Phase 3A and Phase 3B1, citing public safety concerns.Ahluwalia, who is also Punjab general secretary of the Aam Aadmi Party and chairman of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board, personally participated in the drive and removed abandoned cables hanging across roads and residential areas.He said the dangling wires posed a serious risk to pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, children and senior citizens. He said two women riding two-wheelers were recently injured in separate incidents after getting entangled in hanging cables, following which notices were issued to the companies concerned directing them to remove the unused wires within 15 days.As no corrective action was taken even after the deadline expired, the councillor initiated the removal drive. He said the matter had earlier been raised with the deputy commissioner, the chief engineer of the Mohali municipal corporation and PSPCL officials, but no effective action followed.The drive was carried out with the support of resident welfare associations and local residents. Ahluwalia warned that if the remaining hazardous cables are not removed promptly, the issue would be taken up with the competent authorities for legal and administrative action.He also appealed to residents to report hanging or abandoned cable wires to the municipal corporation or his office so that accidents can be prevented.
