Varanasi: An accused of abduction, and rape attempt on a minor girl was arrested by Chaubeypur police after an encounter near Singhpur underpass late on Monday night.DCP Varuna Zone Pramod Kumar, on Tuesday, said that the 20-year-old accused took a 6-year-old girl and her younger sister, 5, of a village under the limits of Chaubeypur police station, with him on bicycle when they were returning from school on Monday afternoon. At some distance, he left the younger girl and took the elder one with him.The girl’s sister returned home and informed the family members about the incident, after which they started searching for the girl and informed the police.While checking the CCTVs installed in the area. a footage showed the accused taking the girl on a bicycle on the route leading to the dry well, and in the next footage he was seen alone.The police and the villagers launched a search on the same route when they heard the girl’s cries from a 70-ft dry well near Deehbaba temple in Chittampur. The police and villagers immediately made arrangements to rescue her.The DCP said that the girl suffered minor injuries on head and was handed over to her family after first aid and medical examination. On a complaint of the girl’s family, an FIR was lodged against the accused on the charges of abduction, attempt to rape, attempt to murder and sections of Pocso, said the DCP.ACP (Sarnath/Crime) Vidush Saxena said that a police team surrounded the accused near Singhpur underpass. In a bid to escape, he opened fire on the cops but suffered bullet injury in leg in retaliatory firing by the police and was caught, said the officials. The injured accused was admitted to hospital. Further investigation was underway, said police.
