Silchar: Several students were injured in a clash between Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) supporters at Cachar College on Tuesday.The confrontation occurred during an NSUI membership drive on campus. An argument broke out between members of the two organisations and escalated into a scuffle, triggering tension.Police reached the college and brought the situation under control. Several injured students were taken to hospital for treatment.The immediate trigger remained disputed. One side alleged that objections were raised to female students wearing hijab while attending the NSUI programme, leading to an altercation. The other side rejected the claim. The circumstances of the clash have not been officially established.The incident came a day after a section of students submitted a memorandum to the Cachar district administration, seeking restrictions on Muslim students wearing hijab and skullcaps on the campus.The clash has intensified the debate over religious attire at the college and raised concerns over the resumption of academic activities.Police are examining the allegations and counter-allegations. College authorities are also assessing the situation, a college official said.The campus remained tense after the incident, though police intervention restored order.
