Jaisalmer: The dispute between the police and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) over permission for a proposed Tiranga Yatra in Jaisalmer intensified Tuesday, with ABVP workers continuing their sit-in outside the Kotwali Police Station for the second consecutive day.The protest began Monday evening and continued throughout the night as ABVP members remained stationed outside the police station. On Tuesday morning, the protesters recited the Hanuman Chalisa at the protest site as a mark of their opposition.ABVP alleged that its members were manhandled and pushed by police personnel when they visited the Kotwali Police Station to inform authorities about the proposed Tiranga Yatra.According to ABVP office-bearers, their members peacefully went to the Kotwali Police Station to complete the formalities related to the Tiranga Yatra planned for Kargil Vijay Diwas on July 26. They alleged that the Station House Officer (SHO) and a head constable behaved rudely, abused them, and physically pushed one of the workers.The organisation demanded the immediate suspension of SHO Surjaram Jakhad and Head Constable Dipendra Singh Shekhawat. Protesters said they first approached the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police with their complaint but were unable to meet the officials. They then began an indefinite sit-in outside the main gate of the Kotwali Police Station.ABVP Department Convener Karnpal Singh Kotda and District Convener Pemp Singh Bhati said the organisation went to the police station only to submit prior intimation regarding the Tiranga Yatra in accordance with rules, but instead of accepting the information, police personnel allegedly misbehaved with them.Heavy police deployment was made outside the police station, while the administration appealed to both sides to maintain peace.The student organisation warned that if action was not taken against the concerned police officials, it would intensify its agitation.Responding to the allegations, SHO Surjaram Jakhad denied any misconduct. He said ABVP members approached the police station seeking permission for the rally, but they were informed that permission must be obtained from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), as required under the rules.“We asked them to obtain permission from the SDM. They wanted permission directly from the police, which is not as per procedure. Despite this, we were trying to assist them. The allegations of misbehaviour are completely false, and no one acted improperly with them,” the SHO said.
