Chandigarh: The Punjab govt will examine the amendments proposed by the Akal Takht to the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, and take a “positive decision”, state finance minister minister Harpal Singh Cheema said on Monday after the Takht gave the govt one month to amend the legislation.Cheema said the proposed amendments would be formally communicated through the Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. “Once the proposed amendments are received from Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the govt will examine them in detail and, after due deliberation, take an appropriate decision,” he said.Earlier in the day, Punjab’s Sikh ministers and AAP MLAs appeared barefoot before the Akal Takht after paying obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar.Cheema and Punjab speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan reiterated their respect for the Akal Takht and said the Punjab govt would give due consideration to its suggestions while upholding the dignity and sanctity of the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs.Sandhwan said he was “fortunate” to have participated in a “long, meaningful and constructive discussion” with the jathedar. However, he declined to disclose details of the deliberations, saying it would not be appropriate in view of the maryada and sanctity of the institution.“The matters discussed at Sri Akal Takht Sahib will be conveyed to the govt for due consideration, but it would not be appropriate to disclose the details of the discussions,” he said.
