Chandigarh: AAP Punjab president and minister Aman Arora on Tuesday posed four questions to Union home minister Amit Shah during his visit to Punjab, challenging the Centre’s record on drugs and gangsterism. He asked why it had failed to stop drugs from Pakistan, how large heroin consignments reached Gujarat’s Mundra Port, why the BJP remained silent on the drug menace during its alliance with the SAD from 2007 to 2017, and what action it had taken against gangsterism in BJP-ruled states.Arora said Punjab shared a 543-km international border with Pakistan, which is guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF) under the Union govt. Despite this, drug consignments continued to enter the country, he said, asking Shah to explain what steps the Centre had taken to secure the border and dismantle trafficking networks. He said the Punjab govt had deployed anti-drone systems to strengthen the second line of defence against cross-border smuggling.Arora also questioned how consignments involving up to 3,000 kg of heroin reached Mundra Port and what action the Centre had taken against those responsible for bringing narcotics into India and distributing them across states. On the drug menace during the 2007-2017 Akali Dal-BJP coalition govt in Punjab, Arora asked why the BJP had remained silent on the spread of ‘chitta’ and gangster culture. He also cited gangster activity and law-and-order concerns in BJP-ruled Haryana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan, asking Shah to explain his govt’s record in these states before targeting Punjab. “The Punjab govt is ready to answer every question about its performance, but the Union govt and the BJP must also answer to the people of Punjab for their own record over the last 12 years,” Arora said.
