AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava seeks stay on conviction, Gujarat High Court issues notice to state govt

Ahmedabad: Gujarat High Court issued a notice to the state govt over AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava’s appeal seeking the suspension of his seven-year prison sentence in an assault and extortion case.Justice V K Vyas on Friday admitted his appeal and sought the govt’s response by Aug 5.As the MLA is looking at disqualification on account of the term of the sentence, he has also urged the HC to stay his conviction. The court clarified that it would not look into the aspect of stay of conviction at this juncture.Besides Vasava, co-accused Rikesh Vasava has also filed an appeal.In June, a sessions court in Narmada district punished Chaitar Vasava, his wife Shakuntaladevi, and seven others with jail terms in a Nov 2023 case related to the assault of forest officials and extortion. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each of them.Last month, HC granted bail to Shakuntaladevi and other accused persons, namely Ramesh Vasava, Mariyam Vasava, Baliram Vasava, Mogra Vasava, and Shakuntala Vasava.While posting further hearing on Aug 5, HC ordered: “The registry shall call for the records and proceedings along with the entire set of the paper book from the concerned trial court.”
