LUDHIANA: The car driver who ran over two women on a morning walk in Ludhiana on Friday, killing one of them, has turned out to be an 18-year-old, who was filming a social media reel, police said on Sunday after arresting him.The accused, Aman Kumar, recently finished high school and has a learner’slicence but was driving alone, said police. The car involved in the hit-and-run has been seized from Rajasthan after being tracked via toll receipts.On the morning of July 3, Harpreet Kaur, 53, and her friend, Meetu, 50, were taking their daily walk in Model Town Extension at 6. 15am when a speeding Dzire struck them from behind.

CCTV footage shows that Meetu was flung aside in the impact but Harpreet was tossed in the air and fell on the bonnet of the car. Instead of stopping, however, the driver accelerated and crushed her as she fell from the bonnet. The driver then sped away but CCTV cameras captured the registration plate. Harpreet was declared dead in hospital.Meetu is being treated for critical injuries. SI Gurshinder Kaur, SHO of Model Town police station, said, “Police found that the 18year-old boy was not a trained driver. He was still learning to drive but managed to get from Abdullapur Basti (his home) to Model Town Extension,around 9km, alone. While driving the car, he was also making a video for his social media account, during which he hit the women and crushed one to death.”Harpreet’s family demands action against the suspect’s family members for allegedly helping the suspect and trying to erase evidence.Mandeep Singh, son of the victim, said, “Police have recovered the video in his mobile which captures the accident. It shows how my mother fell on the car’s bonnet after being hit and was later mowed down. Aman’s father was the eighth buyer of the car. The front windshield was damaged in the incident, which Aman’s father got changed. He clearly tried to destroy evidence. Also, they hid their son with an acquaintance and went toRajasthan by the same car. We demand action against them too.”Asked about the allegation against the suspect’s father, the SHO said, “According to the family, when Aman returned home with a damaged windshield, he told them that he had collided with a vehicle. They were unaware of the fact that Aman hit two women with the car. Even when the video of the incident went viral, the family was unaware that it was their car. So, they got the windshield replaced.”Police are checking how the car was taken to Rajasthan. “If the role of any family member is found, action will be taken,” he said.
