After a month in ICU, girl attacked by suitor for rejecting love proposal dies

Guwahati: A 17-year-old girl, who was injured in a machete attack by a youth after she rejected his love proposal, died at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Friday, after battling for her life for more than a month.The deceased, Mridumudra Deka, was a Class XI student in Assam’s Nalbari district.“She was kept in the ICU. Two surgeries were performed as she had suffered injuries in her spinal cord. She had improved to some extent in between and therefore, physiotherapy was also given to her,” GMCH superintendent Devajit Choudhury said.“However, gradually, her health deteriorated in the last seven days. We informed her family about her deteriorating health condition, which deteriorated further in the last three days. Blood pressure also decreased to a great extent. She was put on a ventilator on Thursday. She had cardiac arrest on Friday morning and she was declared dead at 7.30am,” the GMCH superintendent said.Mridumudra and her cousin, Madhurjya Barman (20), were attacked on May 31 evening in Gangapur village near Jagara in Nalbari district while returning home on a scooty from Nalbari town after buying books. Police said the accused, Roz Ali alias Ashik Ali, attacked them after Mridumudra rejected his proposal earlier.Barman, an assistant secretary of Paschim Nalbari Aanchalik Satra Santha, a regional unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), was declared dead at the Nalbari Medical College and Hospital.The girl was initially admitted to Nalbari Medical College and Hospital and was referred to GMCH on May 31 night.Police said Ali was apprehended on May 31 night from a riverine area in Mukalmua, Nalbari district, where he was hiding. Ali was later killed in police firing after he allegedly tried to escape from the police custody by snatching a self-loading rifle from a policeman and opening fire on the police team.Nalbari senior SP Bibekananda Das said the accused had fired four rounds at the police team, hitting police vehicles and police fired at Ali in retaliation during which a bullet hit him in the chest.Assam forest and environment minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, who hails from Nalbari district and the MLA from the Nalbari legislative constituency, extended condolences to the girl’s family in a Facebook post. “I am deeply saddened by the news that Mridumudra, daughter of Nalbari… has passed away. I pray to God for the eternal peace of her soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to her grief-stricken and unfortunate family,” he wrote.
