Aizawl: Mizoram home minister K Sapdanga on Friday said the three new criminal laws were introduced in response to growing challenges from organised crime and technology-driven offences, with the aim of making India’s criminal justice system “more citizen-centric, efficient, responsive and accountable,” while strengthening infrastructure and capacity building, promoting the use of science and technology, and meeting the needs of contemporary society.Sapdanga was speaking at the State Level Conference-cum-Joint Refresher Course on Naveen Nyaya Sanhitas (NNS) — the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA) — held in Aizawl.He emphasised that the success of NNS would depend on how the public and law enforcement agencies interpret and implement the new laws. He urged participants to make full use of the programme and to coordinate more effectively to strengthen the criminal justice system so timely justice is delivered and citizens’ rights remain safeguarded.The inaugural session was followed by technical and interactive sessions on the three laws, moderated by Cacy Malsawmtluangi Ralte, jointregistrar, Aizawl Bench of the Gauhati High Court, and Annette Lalrinsangi, deputysecretary, state Law & Judicial Department.Presentations on provisions and implementation were delivered by S.P. Moitra, Assam Judicial Service officer and faculty at Judicial Academy, Assam; Bhupen Kumar Nath, faculty at Judicial Academy, Assam; Zonunsanga, SP (Cyber Crime); and Gaurav Tyagi, SP (CID Crime). The programme concluded with a valedictory address by Vincent Lalrokima, membersecretary, Mizoram State Legal Services Authority.The event was attended by executive magistrates from the state general administration department (GAD), judicial officers from the Gauhati High Court Aizawl Bench, govt advocates, officials from the National Informatics Centre, and officials from the home, health & family welfare, and law & judicial departments.
