Notorious liquor smuggler arrested from Haryana sent to jail in Azamgarh

Varanasi: A notorious liquor smuggler and gangster, Vikas Soran, who was arrested in Haryana on April 18, was brought to Azamgarh on transit remand and later sent to jail after being produced before the court.Police said search for him was intensified especially after it became clear that Soran was facilitating the gangs involved in procuring liquor from Haryana to pump into the dry state of Bihar.Azamgarh SP Anil Kumar on Tuesday said that after his arrest, by a joint team of Mehnagar police and Prayagraj field unit STF, from Hisar in Haryana on April 18, Vikas Soran was brought on transit remand and sent to jail after being produced before the court.DIG Azamgarh range had announced a cash reward of Rs 50,000 on him while SP had kept a cash reward of Rs 25,000 for his arrest.According to police, the breakthrough came during the probe into a liquor consignment seized on Feb 15, 2023, which was being smuggled to Bihar by a gang led by Sunil Punia of Sirsa, Haryana. Further investigation established that Soran played a key role in coordinating the transportation of illegal liquor for the gang.Following investigation, the cops filed a chargesheet in the smuggling case before the court based on evidence, and a case under Gangsters Act was registered against the gang members.
