Agartala: Two Bangladeshi minor girls were rescued from separate villages in Tripura’s Sepahijala district in a joint operation by the sub-divisional administration and Childline, police said on Thursday.The girls were found in the border villages of Tamshabari and Urmai under Sonamura police station, triggering an investigation into a suspected racket allegedly involved in producing counterfeit Indian identity documents.Police said preliminary findings suggest the girls entered India illegally more than a year ago after connecting online with two Indian men. They were “cohabiting” with the men “following their marriage,” police said.Dibyendu Das, additional sub-divisional magistrate, said police had been directed to register cases against those from whose houses the girls were rescued. He said action would also be taken against anyone linked to the alleged circulation of Indian identity papers prepared using forged documents.

The girls have been shifted to a govt shelter. Officials said the minors expressed a desire to return to their families in Bangladesh and would be repatriated after completion of legal procedures and formalities.The girls told officials they faced physical and emotional abuse while living with their husbands. Authorities said the investigation is focusing on identifying those who arranged forged identity documents and tracing the wider network suspected to be behind the operation.
