Chennai: A Kenyan woman, found carrying 850gm of cocaine, valued at about ₹15 crore, was arrested by the directorate of revenue intelligence (DRI) sleuths at the Chennai airport on Tuesday. She tried to smuggle the contraband by swallowing capsules containing the drug. Officials suspect she is part of an international drug-trafficking syndicate.A DRI team maintained surveillance at the airport after receiving a specific tip-off that a foreign national would arrive carrying narcotics on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa.The flight landed at about 8.30am on Tuesday. Officials intercepted the woman who travelled from Kenya via Ethiopia on a tourist visa. A search of her baggage did not reveal any contraband. But as suspicion lingered, she was then taken to the airport hospital, where a body scan showed multiple capsules inside her stomach. With the assistance of a medical team, officials recovered about 70 capsules from her body.The capsules contained 850gm of high-grade cocaine with an estimated international market value of ₹15 crore. The DRI seized the narcotics and arrested the woman.
