Ahmedabad teacher suspended after slap leaves Class 10 student with damaged eardrum

Ahmedabad: A Class 10 student of Chanakya School in Nikol allegedly suffered a damaged left eardrum after being slapped by a teacher on Saturday morning. The parents of the 15-year-old have registered their complaint with Krishnanagar police. Ahmedabad City district education officer Rohit Chaudhary (DEO) has issued a show-cause notice to the school, while the sports teacher has been suspended.According to the police complaint by the parents, the incident happened around 7.30am on Saturday, on the school’s ground during a sports period “in public view”.The parents have alleged that the school called them shortly after the incident, informing them that their son had been slapped by a teacher, and asked them to come to the school. When they reached the campus, the teen was found crying and in distress, the complaint states. School staff told them the boy and other students were watching girls play kho-kho during the sports class. The complaint alleges that while the boys were talking among themselves, the sports teacher slapped the boy, causing an ear injury. An ENT consultation by the family allegedly found serious damage to the left eardrum, with bleeding and swelling. The complaint further alleges the student’s hearing in the affected ear has reduced sharply after the slap, and that doctors have put him under observation for a week to 10 days. They have also warned that surgery may be needed if the condition does not improve.According to sources, during a later meeting between the family and the school management, the school representative and the teacher “accepted the mistake”, while the father demanded written accountability, seeking assurance that any future medical and financial responsibility arising from the incident would be borne by the school administration and the teacher.Krishnanagar police inspector V H Joshi said that a non-cognisable complaint has been registered regarding the alleged assault, adding preventive steps have been initiated and that further inquiry would proceed in line with legal procedures.DEO Chaudhary said, “The school has been issued a show-cause notice and the teacher had been suspended. We have sought a detailed report on the incident.”
