Rajkot: A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 20-year-old a nursing student, reportedly his wife, in Porbandar. The move came after the girl’s family alleged that the man deliberately withheld their marriage certificate, causing her severe mental distress.The deceased, Anjali Modi, a nursing student who was also undergoing an internship at a private hospital in Porbandar, allegedly died by suicide on June 23 by hanging herself with a scarf at her residence in the city.Following the incident, Kamalabaug police registered an accidental death case under BNSS. Based on a complaint filed later by her father, Ashok Modi, police registered an offence under BNS for abetment of suicide against Rishik Chauhan, and arrested him on Friday evening.Police inspector R J Ram of Kamalabaug police station said Chauhan was produced before a court on Saturday, which sent him to jail.According to the FIR, Anjali’s parents had travelled to Khambhalia for catering work when they received a call from a neighbour informing them that their daughter had hanged herself. The family rushed back to Porbandar and took her to the govt hospital, where doctors declared her dead.During the investigation, the family came to know that Anjali had entered into a court marriage with Chauhan on July 8, 2025.The complaint states that Anjali repeatedly asked Chauhan to provide her with the marriage certificate. Investigators also found WhatsApp chats in which she allegedly told him she would end her life if she did not receive the certificate. She also reportedly sent him videos showing injuries on her hand.The family alleged that Chauhan intentionally withheld the marriage certificate, subjecting Anjali to mental harassment that ultimately drove her to take the extreme step.Police are investigating why, despite marrying Anjali, he did not hand over the marriage certificate to her.
