Ahmedabad: Students pursuing LLB, five-year integrated law courses and LLM in colleges affiliated with Gujarat University will study the newly implemented four Labour Codes from the academic year 2026-27. The university is set to release the revised syllabus soon. The Govt of India recently reformed labour legislation by consolidating around 15 existing laws into four comprehensive codes. According to Law Faculty Dean Prof. R.V. Mehta, these include the Code on Wages, 2019; the Industrial Relations Code, 2020; the Code on Social Security, 2020; and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020.The updated syllabus aims to align legal education with current laws. Earlier provisions lacked coverage for unorganised sector workers. The new codes include categories such as construction workers, audio-visual workers, digital media employees, inter-state migrant labourers, gig workers and platform workers. The revised curriculum incorporates these laws into two papers on labour and industrial law.All students enrolling in any law programme this year will study the new codes. Even repeater students will have to switch to the revised syllabus and appear for examinations based on the updated labour laws. They can attend classes for the new curriculum at their respective colleges. The university emphasised that teaching obsolete laws holds little value, and it is essential for law graduates to be well versed in current legal frameworks to remain relevant and professionally competent.
