Mumbai: A 49-year-old man was arrested by Matunga police after he allegedly barged into a woman’s car and attempted to rob her at knifepoint in Matunga on Wednesday. The incident occurred in the day outside Don Bosco School.The arrested accused, identified as Ali Basharat, is suspected to be mentally unstable.According to police, the woman, a resident of Sion, went to pick up her two sons, aged six and eight, after their swimming class. As her younger son sat in the front seat and the elder one in the rear, with one of the car doors still partially open, the accused suddenly entered the vehicle.Police said the man pulled out a small knife, threatened to kill the woman and her children, and demanded cash and valuables. The woman immediately raised an alarm, causing the accused to panic and flee from the spot.Hearing her screams, passers-by attempted to apprehend the man, but he managed to escape. However, a police patrol team passing through the area quickly intercepted and detained him.“Our patrol team immediately caught and detained the suspect. After recording the victim’s statement, it was found that he attempted to rob her and threatened her with a knife. We have recovered the weapon and arrested him,” said Anurag Jain, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV).Police are further investigating the case.
